Kenya is currently a net importer of agar and alginate, yet it has the potential to be self-sufficient or even an exporter of seaweed products. Fifteen (15) sites along the Kenyan Coast have been evaluated and found to have the potential for harvesting seaweeds and establishing seaweed farms. Investment opportunities exist in the establishment of seaweed processing plants. This will include the seaweed cottage industry for value addition, processing factories and industrial products manufacturing factories for products like paper, and biofuels, amongst others.
